Nursing in General Practice - It’s a choice’ Recruitment DVD – developed to showcase the role of a nurse in general practice. Barwon Medicare Local acknowledges General Practice Queensland for development of this resource. This video clip was developed by the Queensland Provincial workgroup to raise the profile of nursing in general practice and to support the recruitment of nurses into general practice.
Providing a snap shot of a ‘day in the life’ of three practice nurses’ across different geographical areas in Queensland, the video clip showcases the diverse role of the practice nurse across immunisation, wound management, women’s health, health assessments, patient education, data management and the management of chronic diseases . Funded by the Australian Government, Department of Health and Ageing under the Nursing in General Practice (NiGP) Program.

Newsletters contain information on Barwon Medicare Local educational events, Barwon Health education, and other professional development opportunities for practice nurses and latest news in nursing in general practice. Please notify us if you have changed practices or if there is a new nurse starting in your practice so we can amend/include details on our practice nurse database and ensure you receive newsletters and education mail outs. Practice Nurse EducationThe Barwon Medicare Local (Barwon Medicare Local) offers Practice Nurses four educational events per year, based on professional development need assessment data collected by us. The GP Association is a Royal College of Nursing (RCNA) Endorsed Provider and as such can offer Continuing Nurse Education (CNE) Points to our educational events. Our educational events are advertised via our Practice Nurse Newsletter and event flyers, which are usually sent out 3-4 weeks in advance. Practice Nurse Continuing Professional Development (C.P.D)The introduction of the National registration scheme on July 1st 2010 requires that all nurses on the register will participate in at least 20 hours of Continuing Professional Development each year (a year is 12 months from your registratrion date).
